Joint Mobilisation 24th & 25th May 2019

Clinical Orthopedic Manual Therapy (COMT): Joint Mobilisation is a 2-day hands-on workshop that is part of the COMT Certification – Skillset Approach Program offered by Dr. Joe Muscolino. The goal of the COMT Skillset Approach Certification is to reinforce and hone essential COMT assessment and treatment skills, thereby strengthening your level of critical thinking and effectiveness of practice.

Course Description:

This workshop covers in depth both motion palpation assessment technique and Arthrofascial Stretching (AFS, soft tissue joint mobilization [Grade IV] for Manual Therapists) treatment technique, applied to all joints of the body, including the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, rib cage, and sacroiliac joint, as well as the joints of the upper and lower extremities. This course is a 2-day hands-on workshop.

Motion palpation technique provides the therapist with a simple and direct means of assessing the motion of a specific joint. AFS is a very specific form of pin-and-stretch technique that is the only effective means of stretching intrinsic fascial and muscular tissues of hypomobile joints.

This two-day Clinical Orthopedic Manual Therapy (COMT) workshop begins with motion palpation and AFS of the cervical spine, offering multiple approaches to each range of motion, including traction techniques for the neck. We then learn how to assess and mobilize the thoracic spine and rib cage, and then assess and mobilize the lumbar spine and sacroiliac joint. On day two, we then cover motion palpation and AFS stretching of the joints of the upper and lower extremities. AFS is likely the most powerful and specific orthopedic treatment tool available to manual therapists.

Clinical Orthopedic Manual Therapy for Arthrofascial Stretching is part of larger Clinical Orthopedic Manual Therapy (COMT) Certification. The other hands-on workshops in this series cover the neck, low back/pelvis, upper extremity, and lower extremity.

Course Objectives:

After attending this workshop, the participant will be able to:

  1. Describe the five grades of joint mobilization.
  1. State the indications and contraindications for Arthrofascial Stretching (AFS).
  1. Explain the physiologic basis for motion palpation assessment and AFS treatment techniques.
  1. Demonstrate how to perform motion palpation assessment and AFS treatment techniques for the joints of the body.
  1. Explain and demonstrate the principles of using core body weight and larger muscle groups for efficient body mechanics.

Testimonials:

Joe Muscolino is a master of his profession! His broad knowledge on the human body and extensive experience made the workshops interesting and engaging. The topics were delivered with enthusiasm and great clarity. His instructions were easy to follow and understand and he always had time to check on everyone’s hands-on work. Joe is definitely one of the most genuine teachers I’ve come across. I would highly recommend his workshops to any body-worker. I, myself, can’t wait for the next one!” Zuzana G.,  Sydney.

After having read one of Joe’s books, I was encouraged to attend his workshops for deep tissue massage, stretching and joint mobilisation for the neck and low back & pelvis. I had been trying to find a workshop like this to update and add to my skills for some time. Joe’s teaching method is methodical, full of valuable information, with hands on training and teaching. Bad postural and massage habits I had developed were corrected making my massage techniques more effective with less effort. There was a very friendly and open atmosphere, and Joe was open to seeing the students techniques as well. The education was invaluable and worth every cent. I would highly recommend Joe’s workshops to anyone wanting to improve and add more to their skills. I look forward to future workshops.” Lauren S., Balmain, NSW.

I was impressed with the workshops for a number of reasons – firstly, each point was clear, easy to understand and well supported with factual reason. Secondly, it was very hands-on so that each point was reinforced immediately with Joe getting to each table to fine-tune or compliment. Finally, Joe’s persona was engaging, friendly and thoroughly authoritative. I learnt a number of new treatment techniques and looked at ones I have used for some time from a different angle. All well worthwhile.” Julian W., Melbourne.

Palpation Assessment - 26th & 27th May 2019

This workshop discusses, explores, and workshops the fundamental principles of muscle palpation so the therapist does not have to memorize palpation protocols, but rather can reason them out. Muscle palpation is likely the most powerful tool that a massage therapist possesses to assess the client for effective treatment. This workshop will empower you to critically think through your palpation assessment so that you can creatively apply effective hands-on treatment

The student will be able to:

  • Explain and demonstrate how knowledge of target muscle's attachments canbe used palpate and discern the target muscle.
  • Explain and demonstrate how knowledge of target muscle's actions can beused palpate and discern the target muscle.
  • Explain and demonstrate how to choose the best action of the target muscleto palpate and discern it.
  • Explain and demonstrate how adding resistance can be used palpate anddiscern the target muscle.
  • Explain and demonstrate how to strum perpendicular and follow the targetmuscle in "baby steps" to palpate it in its entirety.
  • Explain and demonstrate how to use knowledge of coupled actions andreciprocal inhibition to palpate a target muscle.
  • Describe and perform a palpation in which pressure is applied slowly andsmoothly.
  • Demonstrate the integration of all the palpation guidelines with a targetmuscle.

Detailed Course Description:

Clinical Orthopedic Manual Therapy (COMT): Palpation Assessment is a 2-day hands-on workshop that is part of a COMT Skillset Certification Program offered by Dr. Joe Muscolino. The goal of the Skillset Certification is to reinforce and hone essential COMT assessment and treatment skills, thereby strengthening your level of critical thinking and effectiveness of practice.

Palpation is the most important assessment skill that exists in the world of manual therapy. Learning to palpate the muscles of the body is not a matter of having muscle palpations presented and then memorizing them. Rather, there is a science and an art to muscle palpation. COMT: Palpation Assessment is a 2-day (16-hour; 16 CE credit hours awarded by the NCBTMB) hands-on workshop that teaches the science and art of palpation; in other words, COMT: Palpation Assessment teaches how to palpate. With this workshop, you will sharpen and master how to do muscle palpation so that you are empowered to locate and assess the skeletal muscles of the human body. Learn to locate the exact attachment points for each and every target muscle that you are palpating; learn how to feel and assess baseline tone for each and every target muscle. The approach of this workshop is to teach from the perspective of critical thinking in a hands-on setting so that you can creatively apply the technique for clinical orthopedic work on your patients/clients.

During the workshop, we will practice and perfect muscle palpation protocols for the musculature of the entire body. Specifically, we will palpate the most clinically important muscles of the body, including some of the more challenging muscle palpations, such as the psoas major, quadratus lumborum, piriformis, rotator cuff group, hip flexor group, pterygoids, and the scalenes and longus muscles of the anterior neck, as well as many others.

This workshop will build mastery and confidence in your palpation assessment skill. Coupling the mastery of palpation assessment with the mastery of treatment skills will lift your clinical orthopedic manual therapy practice to a new level!

COMT: Palpation is part of the new COMT Intensive Skillset Certification.

• The five courses in the Intensive Skillset Certification series are: Palpation Assessment
Orthopedic Assessment Testing
Body Mechanics for the Therapist

Stretching: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Neural Inhibition Techniques Arthrofascial Stretching: Grade IV Joint Mobilization for the Manual Therapist
