SCARWORK – WORKING WITH SCARS. INTEGRATING SCARS INTO THE FASCIAL NETWORK

Training for physiotherapists, massage therapists, cosmetologists, midwives, nurses, physicians, and students of the above fields.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

Discover ScarWork – a manual therapy approach tailored to the type of scar, its age, and the healing process, developed by Sharon Wheeler.

According to its creator, Sharon Wheeler, ScarWork is the art of integrating scars into the fascial network.
The aim of this training is to assess and treat all types of scars using ScarWork manual techniques.

This 3-day course is highly practice-oriented. Participants first learn techniques by working on their own scars and then, in subsequent days, by applying them in therapy with patients. Theoretical lectures present the latest knowledge on scar formation, treatment, and rehabilitation. This training structure allows therapists to quickly gain experience with different types of scars and to observe changes occurring during and after therapy.

Benefits of the ScarWork method:

  • ScarWork can be applied regardless of the age of the scar, using appropriate principles and techniques.
  • It can be used for all types of scars: post-surgical, traumatic, burn, radiation, and others.
  • Therapy reduces local tension and restores mobility between skin, subcutaneous tissue, fat, fascia, and muscles, improving joint range of motion and tissue function around the scar.
  • Techniques are painless for patients and easy to perform for therapists without straining the hands.
  • ScarWork helps reduce pain and normalize superficial sensation, both in hypersensitivity and hyposensitivity.
  • Scars often change in color, becoming softer and smoother to the touch.
  • Visible effects can appear after a single session, but lasting results require a series of treatments.
  • Ultrasound imaging shows that tissues treated with ScarWork realign in a more regular, layered structure.

Methodology:

The method uses no additional tools, oils, or creams. Around 25 techniques are applied, some for superficial tissues, others for deeper layers, and some designed for specific scar types. A key principle is to evaluate how the scar affects the entire body in both static and dynamic conditions. Functional tests performed before and after therapy demonstrate improvements in function.
